THE BELLBOY
The bellboy is essentially representing humanity throughout 2020 and impacted by all those events.
At the beggining of the show, he is in white and he dances on an upbeat music. When we celebrated the new year, I was happy and thrilled go into another decade, fireworks everywhere!
Then the events unravelled one by one and the destruction begins. The bellboy/us suffers until becoming totally beaten and falling appart at the end of the show, direct comparison to my feelings in 2020. The costume reflects that suffering, it is white at the begginining (1st ofJanuary 2020) then becomes red by the end. At the end of the performance he is at the end of the red carpet and dies, as his city/life is destroyed.
He is at the service of those politicians and assisting the teaparty, welcoming them onto the red carpet, bringing them their teapots.
In order to show their direct impact onto humanity, as the events happened Dominika playing the role of the bellboy has integrated part of the choreography of each into her own. She is reacting to the TV screens etc.
For the costume, I worked with Lisha Zhang and Louise Hoving, I was inspired by Wes Anderson’s bellboy in the Grand budapest hotel. To me he portrayed with exactitude the sickening feeling of luxury and exess. The loby boy was the server of those superpowers, the rich as disrespectful as can be, gathering around the table for it’s ultimate destruction.

We knew we wanted extreme embelishments everywhere, and the material to be quite luxurious, or seemingly, as we had to stay within the budget...

Teapot logo, for the hat.

Although inexact,in terms of outfit, I wanted the bellboy to have an extreme chef hat with a teapot logo. So we reworked the hat. We went fabric shopping on goldhawk road and decided on the red fabric for the transformation. I wanted the bellboy to be as surreal as the hats, and not too serious as the whole thing was a mockery.
