Crash in Stock arket
Animation by Filipa Castro

20th of february 2020

The mesh wire, the hat inside and all attached to a circular “plate”. The led light will be around the grid.

We initally wanted the cage to go all the way down to the body, but it was too difficult to perform with it. So I decided to leave it to the face.

This one was a bit more last minute than the others. It was a difficult headpiece in terms of conveying an effective representation of the event. We were portraying something intangible.
I was trying to find the best way to portray the event, by showing something that speaks to everyone. At first I thought of  a  rollercoaster but thought it was too metaphorical. I also wanted to do a tree of phones, made out of selfie sticks all on the stock crash app but this would have been too heavy.
So then i litterally represented the grid and the zigzag that represents the crash. The zig zag would be done out of STRONG red led light. The image that comes up the most on the internet.I also wanted to make the grid, a cage, a cage of data and, the trap of our world

Juice the performer, brought new ideas and had a calculator, she strapped the calculator to herself and performed with it, to represent the calculations and numbers. She made very robotic movements, to show the digital aspect of the market.

Skye Ju, Ceramicist, wanted to explore our personal  relationship with our economy and esentially our money. She told me about our natural charactestic trait to cling on to our posessions and personal interests.
In her drawings you can see a little man hugging what he has left, hugging his money and posessions. Just like the main scare of everyone in 2020, the fright of loosing their assests, their investments, their shares and their values...

Here you can see the man, represented as hugging the teapot and teacup. I asked to add a line to relate directly to the zigzag and hence to the headpiece. Unfortunately the line was too faint with the glaze,  so once with the teapot I went over it with a posca pen and a permanent marker.

The music for the performance was pretty rythmic so we decided to push one button with each  touch and use therefore the calculator.
