Murder Hornet
Animation by Filipa Castro

May 2020

We  started by researching the story of Hornets, and when they first appeared. They eat off entire bees nests, and can cause death to us human. Almost twice the size of a regular hornet.

When planning with Elin Hughes, we wanted to show sting on the teapot, and stabs as if shards of glass. We would then transfer my drawings onto the teapot. I made sheets of murder hornets in different positions to print on the transfer paper, and we decided for the teapot to have a white bacground to make the hornets visible.

I worked with Elisabeth Sur on this hat, and we were  inspired by Thierry  Mugler beautiful hornet. The idea was to make to work with fabric on a metal frame.

First we worked with tape to  figure  out the  shape we wanted,  and to make the pattern.

The structure inside, foam for padding  hard mesh for structure and visibility. Elastic for stability.

With the rhinestones.

The  shiny fabric we  have selected.
Working on the metal frame.
The antennas weren’t  long enough  to my taste. I preferred the Thierry  Mugler  version with  super long antennas.

A drawn up mockup of what we would like to do. with rhinestones and also adding black and shades to the mandibles. To make them more aggressive.

The  texture  the rhinestones  add  is amazing.

Pearl, the  performer with the  mask finished in rehearsal.
She cannot see very much so we added holes in the underlayer  for visibility, through  the fabric. Unlike the others this headpiece is very fitted  which means that she  is not restricted with her movement.
